How do you feel that Ardrossan has been nominated for a Plook Award?

by Alison Mann

Cheeky Carbuncle Awards organisers have nominated Ardrossan for a notorious prize.

Ardrossan is one of seven towns nominated for the Plook on the Plinth Award which recognises the worst towns, buildings and planning disasters in the Carbuncle Awards.

Organisers, Urban Realm architecture magazine said on their website about the town: "Woefully unambitious waterfront regeneration has failed to capitalise on Ardrossan's strategic position as a gateway to Arran. Planned development of the Ardeer Peninsula poses a significant challenge to the existing centres of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston."

Ardrossan is joined in the hall of shame by Nairn, Linwood, Irvine, Fort William, Dumbarton, Cambuslang and Port Glasgow.

Organisers believe the prize can actually have a positive effect on the winning town, stating: "Although, on the face of it, a negative award, the Carbuncles have in fact had considerable success not just in raising awareness of urban design but in improving the fortunes of some of our forgotten places and spaces as previous winners of the inglorious trophy will attest."

What do you think about the nomination, are you proud of your town?

Sir
I write to say how much it disappoints me to read that Ardrossan is once again being nominated for Plook on The Plinth award. The town seems to generate negativity at every turn yet so much has been achieved over the years since the last time we were nominated. It is true that the new build around the harbour failed to inspire yet is a sight better than what it was even if it has failed to capture the imagination of the people who live here. So much cash has been poured into the town by private builders who only aim is to secure a profit with yet more houses. The marina is nice to walk around but that is all. You can stop for something to eat at the restaurant and enjoy the tops of the boats. A view of boats bobbing around is hardly regeneration of a town. We have a regeneration company who have been charged with improving the towns under its banner. The company has failed in its mandate and is content for house builders and a few shop being created. We have derelict land near the shore front of South Beach that is more like a wars zone being allowed to lay in such a state by the owners. These areas could be cleaned up at least yet the council has been unable to secure this. The real shame of this award is we the town people of Ardrossan have been saddled with something that is beyond our ability to change because our council is content to pass the buck over to an unallocated quango. Please understand that Ardrossan is a great town on the clyde coast and being born in the town and seeing it over the years slowly eroded away it is sadness that once again we are nominated for Plook on the Plinth.
Respectfully yours
Kenny Mac Dougall

Is it not interesting that two areas that fall under Irvine Bay Regeneration's remit are nominated.  Irvine & Ardrossan...What does that say about how they are spending our money?
