Community offenders funding boost for Ardrossan clubs
13 DecemberTwo Ardrossan sports clubs have received a boost from a funding programme which supports offenders carrying out unpaid work in the community.
Ardrossan Indoor Bowling Club (who receive £24,000), and Ardrossan Winton Rovers (£8,800) are beneficiaries of the scheme, which will see the funding improve facilities. Work on the projects will be carried out by offenders on Community Payback Orders.
Ardrossan Indoor Bowling Club improvements will allow the facility to be used for the likes of zumba, aerobics, badminton and functions, while the work at Ardrossan Winton Rovers will see disabled access work and improvements to spectator facilities for community.
The two local clubs are amongst a group of North Ayrshire community sports clubs which have received almost £85,000 from the programme.
Earlier this year, the Scottish Government allocated £325,000 to the South West Scotland Community Justice Authority (CJA) to support the involvement of offenders sentenced to unpaid work in upgrading, maintaining or refurbishing local sports facilities.
Funding for four local projects through the Payback Sports Facilities Fund was awarded by Councillor Peter McNamara, in his role as Convenor of the CJA.
Councillor McNamara said: “As Convenor of the CJA, I am delighted to be able award this funding to the four excellent local community sports clubs. The funding will support the valuable work they do in the community.
“The Community Payback Order is also valuable, as it helps to teach offenders the importance of a hard day’s work and the satisfaction of completing a project.
“I am looking forward to visiting the clubs to see the progress being made over the coming months.”
