Susan's Rotary talk highlights work of Ardrossan dementia centre
24 AugustPresident Stewart Mackay presided at last Thursday's meeting of Ardrossan and Saltcoats Rotary Club when Susan Maxwell, from the Harbour Centre, a dementia care centre in Ardrossan, was the speaker.
Susan is a Registered General Nurse who works at the Harbour Centre, Ardrossan a care centre for dementia sufferers which was established in 1996 at the former police station near Ardrossan harbour by Alzheimers, Scotland but has since moved to more spacious accommodation in Parkhouse Road.
The parent organisation was formed in 1987 and has grown to provide a network of care centres from Skye to the Borders. The centre provides day care to give respite to carers of dementia sufferers of which Alzheimers is but one type albeit the largest and most common.
The NHS provides specialist dementia nurses based at Crosshouse Hospital to give support to families of patients with the condition of which there are 1838 in North Ayrshire and 52 of whom are cared for one or more times a week at Parkhouse Road.
Susan gave some more details about the disease and the way in which they assist patients not only with activities within the centre but also with, for example, financial and other problems which they and their families may have.
An interesting discussion followed with questions and comments regarding sufferers that many of us know personally before Anne McGrattan proposed a comprehensive vote of thanks. Susan was then presented with a cheque for £500 from the club to assist with the centre's work.
Business matters were held over to a later date except for a decision to make a further substantial donation to Pakistani Flood Relief which is an ongoing disaster which has touched all of our hearts before President Stewart brought the meeting to a close.
